Global Grind

New Features You Should Know

NEW WAYS TO FIND CONTENT

You can now sort content on any channel by:

  • “Most Recent,” for the newest content submitted to the site
  • “Most Votes,” for the content with the most grinds
  • “Most Views,” to see the content that’s been clicked on the most, and
  • “Most Comments,” to see the content people are talking about the most.

TAGS AND SEARCH

You know how we always ask for you to enter tags for every item you submit? Well, we’re not just asking for our own amusement. When you put accurate tags on your items, it allows other users to easily search, find and grind your submissions -- like this search on all things Diddy.

Good tags also allow your items to show up in our new Top 20 tag cloud. Clicking a tag will take you to a list of all items with that tag, from newest to oldest. Can’t get enough Rihanna? Click her name in the tag cloud to see our entire catalog of Rihanna stories, photos and video.

CUSTOMIZING GLOBAL VIEW

With our new Global View, you can choose the feeds you want to see so you can get access to the content you want most.

First, click “see more” within the category you want to customize.

On the next screen, click “Customize This View” (beneath the feeds).

That will open a list of new feeds for you to choose from, and will also allow you to rearrange or delete any of the default or current feeds you have. To delete any of your feeds, click “Delete” or on the green bar at the top of the feed. To rearrange your feeds, click and drag on the word “Move” and reposition the feed where you want it.

To add a new feed to your Global View, click on the feed you want in the gray box.

In the pop-up window asking if you want to add the feed, click “Add.” The feed will be added to your Global View.

Need some help choosing feeds? Look no further than our “Recommended Feeds.”Click on any of our recommended feeds to add them to your Global View.

JOIN A GROUP

We’re glad to see some folks are taking advantage of our new Groups feature and joining the Remembering Bernie Mac group. Join the group to connect with other Bernie Mac fans and submit and dicuss Bernie Mac content. Or create your own group on whatever topic you wish.

You can sign up for this or any other group’s RSS feed to get group updates by clicking “Grab Group RSS feed” next to the orange button at the top of the group’s page.

You also have the option to make the group’s content public or private.

Our new submission tool makes grinding content easier than ever. Don’t like the photo we pulled in for your submission? Search for a better one on Flickr. On the back end, we’ve made it easier to grind your favorite web videos.

We Remember You

Remember we told you that we were trying something new? We switched things up to give more users a taste of Global View, and it turns out, a lot of you like it. (We know, we know. Getting all the latest news, gossip and updates from the top sites in one place? What’s not to like?)

But, we’ve also heard from some of you who prefer Discovered, Up & Coming, or our GG Spotlight view. So we’ve decided the best thing to do is let YOU pick your favorite view and give it to you every time you visit us.

If you’re logged into Global Grind and leave the site, we'll remember the last view you were in and we'll automatically take you there when you come back. Think of it like TiVo. Leave the site, go get a drink and come back. We'll still be paused where you left off.

Also, coming very soon, you'll be able to specify your favorite view in your profile, so that you can always experience Global Grind the way you want to.

Keep that feedback coming to globalgrind.com/feedback.

A Global View of the Web

Hey, Global Grinders! You may have noticed that we’re trying something new on the site.

Now, when you visit Global Grind, the first thing you’ll see is Global View. A lot of our users aren’t familiar with Global View, so we wanted to bring it to the forefront and expose more people to it.

HOW GLOBAL VIEW WORKS

Global View combs the web and brings you a variety of perspectives in one place. The latest content from the best sites and blogs is fed into Global View. Click on the headlines that interest you and check out the content.

See something worth grinding? The small green “G” indicates that the content has not yet been submitted to our site. Click on the content to view it, and then click the “GRIND IT FIRST” button to submit it to the site.

If someone has already submitted a piece of content from Global View (indicated by a small gray “G”), you can still check it out and grind it, trash it, or comment on it.

OTHER VIEWS

Don’t forget to check out our other views:

Discovered view = Our most popular content, voted up to the top by users.

Up & Coming view = See what other grinders have recently added to the site.

GG Spotlight view = Our editors’ picks of the best content on the site.

Which view do you prefer?  Let us know at globalgrind.com/feedback.

Confused About Grinding and Trashing?

We've heard there’s some confusion among you grinders about what a “grind it” or "trash it" vote actually means, so let me explain.

When you “grind it,” you’re vouching for the importance and popularity of that piece of content, not your personal agreement or disagreement with the views expressed within it. Grinding something is your way of saying, "We as grinders need to be aware of this piece of content." Your "grind it" vote helps bump it up the ranks so that more people are likely to see it and share it. For instance, as much as you might be offput by this fugly dress Jennifer Hudson wore to the Oscars, you would still grind the photo because, well, there’s just no way we’re not gonna speak on this mess.

The same goes for trashing content. Don't trash a video or story because you disagree with it, trash it because it’s just not worth talking about. Good examples of stuff to trash include spam and solicitationsblatant self-promotion, general wackness, or anything you’re downright sick of seeing on the site. Want it to disappear? Think it has no place here? Then, “trash it!”

Glad we cleared that up. Knowledge is power.

More New Features! We've Upped Our Game

"It's a celebration!" © Rick James

Our community’s growing like crazy, and the content you've been submitting is insightful, funny, scandalous, and downright addictive. Thanks to you, Global Grind continues to be the top destination for what matters to the hip-hop community. Here are some great new features the Global Grind team rolled out. Try them out and give us your feedback.

Be Social
You were the first in your crew to have an iPhone. You had a Wii before anybody else on your block. For weeks (or maybe months), you’ve been up on Global Grind before all your friends. Now it’s time to invite them to join you. Click “Invite” on the upper right corner of any page and enter their email addresses (separated by a comma, of course) and a personal message. You can also access the Invite function from your profile page.

Be Opinionated
See a comment that makes you squirt milk out your nose? (My personal fave is Speezy’s comment, “Lewinsky = Superhead of politics.”) Now you can rate comments and also sort them by their ratings. On the comments page, click the green “thumbs up” or the orange “thumbs down” icon to rate other users’ comments. To skip the fluff and see only the top-rated comments, use the “Filter Comments” drop-down menu. Comments are assigned a good, average, or poor rating, depending on user votes.

Keep Track
Now you can see everything you’ve ever viewed, submitted, grinded, trashed, commented on, or added to your favorites. You can also see the same for any grinder whose profile is public. Just click on their grinder’s name to see their user history.

Hey, Look at Us!
ABC News, USA Today, BusinessWeek, Fast Company and more are all talking about Global Grind. Read and watch media coverage of Global Grind on our new press page.

Keep Grinding. Toodles!
